The magical properties of ginger have been known for over 5000 years.  Any magick dealing with manifesting abundance, prosperity, luck, passion, love, and energy, would work well with ginger.  But ginger has a special affinity towards healing, protection, and spell enhancements.

Using ginger in magickal or spiritual rituals works on an emotional, physical, astral, and spiritual level to affect change to occur per your will.

Energy is the living fabric of the universe.  Like everything else, some people are better at sensing the spaces and energies between things and can perceive some of these energies that others can not.

But magick is a spiritual and natural force that everyone possesses.  We all have the energy within us to manipulate these forces around us.  It just takes intent and practice.

Learning how to manipulate this energy is not about rules and procedures, it is about vision and spirit.

The more committed you are to your intent, the more successful the outcome will be.

While reading this article, keep in mind that there is always more than one way to accomplish your magical goal.

Take these suggestions we give you as a base, and make them your own.

Magick comes from the ability to channel the powers of hidden energies all around us.  The magic comes from your head and your heart, not from artificial props.

The bottom line about magick is this – magick works!

As a general rule, ginger has magickal and spiritual powers that include 5 main properties (although there are more):

  • Healing
  • Protection
  • Abundance Prosperity and Good Luck
  • Passion and love
  • Spell Enhancement

What Is Ginger?

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a flowering plant that produces a rhizome (similar to a root) that is widely used as a spice and in traditional medicine and magick.

The use of ginger was first documented over 5000 years ago in Southeast Asia, India, and China, although its actual origins have been lost to time.

But Chinese have long used ginger to treat various ailments.

In the Middle Ages, ginger was used to ward off the plague

Early in history, people noticed that when food had ginger in it, the food would not go bad as quickly, and so these people thought that ginger had magical properties, including protection.

We will look at a few ways you can use ginger in your magickal and spiritual rituals.

Ginger Correspondence

  • Ginger is considered Masculine.
  • The vibration of ginger is considered part of the fire element.
  • Ginger is associated with Mars and the Sun.
  • The astrological sign of ginger is Aries.
  • Ginger is associated with the deities Hecate, Ameretat, and Artemis.
  • Chakras that work with ginger:  Root Chakra.
  • Ginger is associated with the following crystals: citrine, carnelian, pyrite, and garnet.

5 Magical Properties Of Ginger

Since the earliest writings, using plants and herbs is one of the oldest magickal tools known.  Through observation and use, people have learned the magickal properties of plants.

Here are some ways you can incorporate ginger into your everyday magickal and spiritual practices.

Can ginger be used for healing?

Ginger can help heal you by bringing an underperforming root chakra back into balance.  An underperforming root chakra can cause feelings of fear, anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, lethargy, and a lack of focus.

Note: We are talking about the magickal and spiritual healing properties of ginger, not the physical healing properties – although physical healing can sometimes result from magickal and spiritual healing

Ginger can magnify and manipulate the energy used to heal the chakra system as well as the organs and systems of the physical body.

To balance the other 6 chakras, you must first heal the root chakra.

 What are chakras?

Chakras refer to the energy centers (or nerve bundles and major organs) of our bodies.

The are 7 main chakras (although some believe there are up to 114 chakras spread throughout the body).

The seven chakras, starting from your head and working down to the base of your spine are:

Diagram of the 7 chakras of the human body

  • Crown Chakra
  • Third Eye Chakra
  • Throat Chakra
  • Heart Chakra
  • Solar Plexus Chakra
  • Sacral Chakra
  • Root Chakra

How do you know magickal or spiritual healing is working?

Spiritual and magickal healing is measured by a perceived increase in well-being, peace, empowerment, a feeling of communion with all life, and sometimes physical healing.

How do you use ginger to balance your root chakra?

You can drink ginger tea, diffuse ginger essential oil, or take a bath with ginger.

But don’t expect ginger to magickly heal you all by itself.

Spiritual and magickal healing requires intent, practice, and a few other practices.

Other teas you can drink to help balance your root chakra include dandelion root, sage, and elderflower.

Other things to do to balance your root chakra.

  • Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Dance
  • Pilates
  • Using sounds such as a mantra or gong
  • Wearing or concentrating on the color red
  • Working with healing crystals
  • Walking outside
  • Gardening
  • Rolling your feet using a small ball

We suggest you try drinking ginger tea before doing any of these other suggestions to help balance your root chakra.

Balancing your root chakra will take some work and will not happen overnight for most people.

If you would like to read a really good book about using techniques for healing with spirit and light, I highly recommend the following book by Alberto Villoldo, PH.D. “Shaman, Healer, Sage“.

This book chronicles the travels and training in energy medicine that Dr. Villoldo took with Inka shamans.

Can ginger be used for magickal protection?

Ginger can be used when you need immediate protection from spiritual forces or when you require long-term protection.  Use ginger to protect a space, protect one from nightmares, or protect yourself.

Protection magic can be applied anywhere, on yourself, in your home, at work, or even in your car.

As a result, there are countless ways to perform protection rituals

For an in-depth discussion about some of the more common essential oils that can be used for magickal protection, check out our article “16 Essential Oils For Protection“.

When using something like ginger for protection, you must understand the source of what you are trying to gain protection from.

Are you dealing with a spirit, an attack from another person, magickal missteps on your part, broken vows, or just negative energy?

Depending on the type of attack, you may need more than incense.  You may need to perform a banishing ritual, create a shield, use an amulet of protection, etc.

Note: Just using ginger and hoping for the best is not enough.  There must be intent behind what you are doing.  Intent determines the outcome

Intent helps you to focus on your purpose which will help to influence events, effect change in material and non-material conditions, and help present an illusion of change that can have a positive effect on you and your surroundings.

So keep intent in mind when looking at all these examples we present.

Burn ginger incense to protect your space or home

Burning incense has been recognized by nearly every culture as a means of harnessing the spiritual power of herbs, resins, and woods.

When burning an herb such as ginger, you want to have your burning incense in something easy to carry around since you will typically start at the back and work your way to the front and out the door.

  • Place your incense on a charcoal disc that has been placed in an incense burner.
  • Light your disc and wait 5-10 minutes until the disc has turned grey.
  • You can now place your herbs, powder, root, or resin on the disc.
  • You may also wish to burn ginger with other protection herbs such as sage and rosemary.

Warning: Don’t burn too much or else the smoke can become overpowering.

Charcoal discs are inexpensive.  Click Here for a 100-pack from Amazon.

Here are a variety of Charcoal Incense Burners from Amazon.

You can also burn ginger incense when performing your rituals.

Remember, your spell begins when you start preparing your herbs/incense, or when you start to write down your spell.

For this reason, it is better to create your own incense from raw materials instead of purchasing ready-made incense.

By creating the incense yourself, you are placing magical energy into your incense.

If you want to learn about making incense, the best book you can get on the subject is Wylundt’s Book of Incense.

Place ginger under the pillow to prevent your child (or adult) from having nightmares

People have long believed that you can place a piece of fresh ginger (or an entire ginger root) under a pillow or under a bed to help stop nightmares from occurring for your child or even an adult.

Rosemary is also known for keeping bad dreams away.  You may wish to place these protective herbs and spices in a mojo bag that you can place under your child’s pillow or bed.

Plus, you can tell your child what you are doing to protect them and help keep them safe from nightmares.

Place a small piece of dried ginger in a mojo bag and carry it with you to take advantage of the protective powers of ginger

A mojo bag is a bag containing one or more magical items.

Mojo bags are most popular in Hoodoo, but anyone can use them.  Native Americans refer to them as medicine bags.

A mojo bag derives its principal power from the signatures of the charged natural materials that are placed in it.

The size of the bag is determined by how many items need to be carried.

Many times mojo bags are used to manifest results in one’s life, such as coming into money, good luck, or finding love.  In this case, your mojo bag will be used for magickal protection.

Herbs you may wish to place in your mojo bag to help protect you include:

  • Black Pepper
  • Chamomile
  • Comfrey
  • Ginger
  • Horsetail
  • Lavender
  • Marjoram
  • Nettle
  • Nutmeg
  • Peppermint
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Skullcap

Spread ginger powder in the 4 corners of a room or throughout your yard

The energy of the home is really important.

As part of a protection spell, while spreading your ground-up herbs in each corner, you can also do the following:

Once a week at night go around to every window and door and draw the pentacle in the air in front of it.

Pentacle with drawingsSay this when you are done.

“Spirit protect this place from all evil,

and may the angels guard this home,

and all within.

So Mote It Be.”

Other ground-up herbs you may wish to spread with ginger or alone to protect your space include:

  • Basil
  • Sage
  • Rosemary
  • Pine
  • Lavender

As an alternative, while spreading your herbs, you may wish to chant your own mantra or incantation to voice your positive intentions.

If you wish to grind your herbs down to powder, here is a nice granite mortar and pestle set from Amazon.

Add ginger to your simmering potpourri to help cleanse and protect your space

Potpourris are a wonderful way of adding the magical power of herbs into your home and they make your home smell absolutely fabulous.

Can ginger be used to increase abundance, prosperity, and good luck?

The magical properties of ginger have a natural affinity towards manifesting prosperity, abundance, and good luck.

When working with abundance and prosperity magick, don’t expect money or good luck to just fall into your lap.

You want a spell that unfolds gently instead of releasing it all at once.  When released all at once, there are bound to be unforeseen consequences.

When casting a spell for wealth, prosperity, or good luck, make sure you are specific in your request.  Be careful what you cast for.

If you cast a spell blindly to come into $10,000, you may get your $10,000 but at the expense of a loved one passing away and leaving you the money.

Simple ways to use ginger to attract abundance, prosperity, and good luck into your home

  • Keep a ginger plant in your home to attract good fortune.
  • Chew a piece of ginger or drink ginger tea before performing magical work to increase your own energy making your spell more successful.
  • Use ginger incense on the tools you will use for abundance, prosperity, and good luck spells before performing your magick.
  • Burning powdered ginger root or smudging with it can help you attract abundance.
  • Add a small amount of ginger to the herbs used in your magic to boost the strength of your spell

There is far too much to know when using magick for abundance and prosperity to explain in a small paragraph.

For an in-depth discussion on the subject, I suggest you check out this excellent book “Practical Prosperity Magick” by Ellen Dugan.

Some types of ginger have a more woodsy, spicy aroma while other types of ginger have a strong lemon smell.
