In magickal circles, the magical properties of chamomile are often used for protection, purification, and luck.  Chamomile is one of the nine sacred herbs in Anglo-Saxon traditional Witchcraft.

What is chamomile?

Chamomile is a member of the Asteraceae family, the second-largest plant family.  This family consists of over 32,000 known species of flowering plants, shrubs, vines, and trees.

The strong fragrant scent of chamomile will often reveal itself before you see the plant.

There are two varieties of chamomile – English/Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) and German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita).

Chamomile is a powerful magickal herb.

Because of this power, chamomile is a popular ingredient to use in magickal rituals and spell casting and has been used as a healing herb for thousands of years.

People commonly use chamomile tea to promote healing, and stress reduction, and to have a peaceful sleep.

Both varieties of chamomile have similar uses and magickal properties, but for magick, Roman chamomile is generally the preferred variety to use in magick and is the one we will mainly be referencing in this article.

Chamomile can be used during meditation to relax the mind and to find humility or to forgive others.

Chamomile is one of the nine sacred herbs in Anglo-Saxon traditional witchcraft.  These sacred nine herbs include:

  • Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)
  • Chervil (Anthriscus cerefolium)
  • Crab apple (Malus sylvestris)
  • Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)
  • Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)
  • Nettle (Urtica dioica)
  • Plantain (Plantago lanceolata or Plantago major)
  • St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum)
  • Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)

Although chamomile can be burned, it is typically used in a tea, crushed, as an essential oil, or as incense.

Other names that chamomile will sometimes go by include: Earth apple, Ground apple, Maythen, Scented mayweed, and Whig plant.

As a general rule, chamomile has magickal and spiritual powers that include 3 main properties (although there are more):

  • Protection
  • Purification
  • Luck

About magick

There is always more than one way to accomplish your magickal goals.  Using the magickal properties of chamomile is but one tool from an arsenal of tools and techniques you should be using.

The practice of magick is more common than one might think.  Most people practice some sort of religion and essentially all religions have traces of magick in them.

Most religions use various magickal charms, amulets, etc., all derived from earlier pagan religions.

Magick is a spiritual and natural force that everyone possesses and has nothing to do with evil.

Magick is about aligning oneself with natural forces to manifest an intention.

Magick comes from the ability to channel the powers of hidden energies all around us.  Different traditions have different names for this energy such as mana, chi, or prana.

Learning to use magick just takes intent and practice.

The more committed you are to your intent, the more successful the outcome will be.

Magick comes from your head and your heart, not from artificial props and tools.  But if these tools help you to manifest your magick, then by all means use them.

Common tools used in magick include candles, crystals, herbs, and talismans.

While reading this article, keep in mind there is always more than one way to accomplish your magickal goal.

Take these suggestions we give you as a base, and make them your own.

Magick works!

3 Magical Properties Of Chamomile

In old-world magic, using plants and herbs is one of the oldest magical tools known.  Over many years, through observation and use, people have learned the magickal properties of plants.

Following are some examples of how you can use chamomile in your daily magick and spiritual rituals.

Note: We are talking about the magical and spiritual properties of chamomile, not the physical healing properties – although physical healing can sometimes result from magical and spiritual uses.

Can chamomile be used for protection?

Chamomile has powerful protective properties.  Chamomile can be used in banishing rituals and can help to create a metaphysical barrier against negative energies, hexes, and curses.  Use chamomile in a sachet, as a floor wash, or as a tea, or plant it near doors and windows.

If you plan to delve into magick, banishing should be one of the core skills you should learn to develop early in your magickal journey.

Protective magick is about guarding and regaining your power.

You can either create your magickal protection on your own or you can call upon protective deities for protection.

The 13 most common protective deities called upon for protection include.

Anubis (Egyptian) – The gatekeeper to the underworld that is a protector and guardian.

Artemis (Greek) – The Maiden Goddess of the crescent moon that can teach you to be brave and courageous.

Hecate (Greco-Roman) – The Phantom Queen that is the patroness and protector of Witches.

Horus (Egyptian) – The son of Isis and Osirus, and is the patron of matters of law and justice.

Isis (Egyptian) – The supreme Egyptian Mother Goddess that specializes in marriage, family, divination, and protection.

Kali (Hindu) – The “Great protector” and champion of women in peril who is a good choice to call upon when you are in physical danger.

Lilith (Sumerian) – The divine lady owl that is called upon when you find yourself under psychic attack.

The Morrigan (Celtic) – Goddess of bloodlust, revenge, and prophecy.

Nepthys (Egyptian) – The Revealer, will help you discover what remains hidden.  Excellent deity to call upon for protection and psychic self-defense.

Shiva (Hindu) – The lord of sweeping change.  If you need protection immediately, this is a good deity to call upon.

Thor (Norse) – The everyman’s god.  Loves to lend his aid to people in need and admires acts of bravery and courage.

Zeus (Greek) – A storm bringer that can grant protection, wisdom, and cunning, if you approach him respectfully and honestly.

To help prevent negative energy from entering your home, plant chamomile near your doors and windows.

You can also create a protective sachet that you carry with you when you feel you may be in magickal danger.

Other herbs besides chamomile that you may wish to include in your protective sachet include:

Angelica – Ward off evil spirits.

Bay leaves Offers protection against negative energies and evil entities.

Black pepper Repels negative energy and protects you against harm.

Cloves Protects against evil spirits and negative energies.

Juniper berries Often used to cleanse a space of negative energy.

Lavender Used to promote peace and protection.

Mugwort – Offers powerful protection and is used to ward off negative energy.

Sage Known for its cleansing properties, is used to purify and protect spaces.

Protection magic can be utilized under the following circumstances:

  • Coming into contact with negative energies and spirits.
  • Stumbling into places of negative power and being unprepared.
  • Misuse of magick or broken vows that turn on you.
  • When you are under attack from other magick practitioners.

Depending on the type of occult attack, here are some common indications that may occur when you are under a magickal attack:

  • Feelings of despair
  • Feelings of oppression
  • Anxiety
  • Fear
  • Troubled dreams
  • Fatigue
  • Feeling out of touch with time
  • Feeling of being followed
  • See things that are not there
  • Smells with no source
  • Uncharacteristic compulsions

These same types of conditions can also occur from psychological and medical problems.  If you are having such problems, do not rely on magick to cure such problems, seek professional help.

Protection magick can be applied anywhere, on yourself, in your home, at work, or even in your car.

As a result, there are countless ways to perform protection rituals.

Your intent plays a crucial role in whether your magick will work.

Intent helps you to focus on your purpose which will help to influence events, effect change in material and non-material conditions, and help present an illusion of change that can have a positive effect on you and your surroundings.

If you are planning on using chamomile to protect yourself, there are 3 main steps you should do when using chamomile in a protection ritual.

  • Cleanse yourself of negative energy in a bath either using just water or enhanced with salts and herbs.
  • Create a protective shield around you with your mind.
  • Meditate so you can control your mind and launch your defense.

Once you have completed these three steps, then you can begin your protective ritual with chamomile.

Your protection ritual doesn’t start when you use chamomile, your protection ritual begins when you start preparing yourself, or if you grow your own chamomile, your spell starts with caring for your plant.

And remember, your intent is very important.

Banishing ritual using chamomile.

Note:  Please keep in mind that using chamomile or any other herb or tool is not a guarantee of success in banishing negative energy or influences.

  • Brew yourself some chamomile tea and allow it to cool.
  • While the chamomile tea is cooling, create a protective circle around yourself.
  • Light a white candle to symbolize the removal of negative energy and the banishing of unwanted influences.
  • Sprinkle some of the cooled chamomile tea around your sacred space, tools, and yourself.
  • To help create a protective barrier, you can sprinkle yourself with chamomile essential oil or any other protective essential oil.
  • Visualize that the chamomile is helping to generate a protective shield around you that blocks negative energy from getting in but allows positive energy to flow.  (I like to visualize a glowing white bubble of light 6-12 inches around my entire body).
  • Repeat a prayer, affirmation, or chant  (I like to close my eyes while doing this).  If you have a deity you would like to ask for assistance, now is the time to ask for help.
  • Once you feel protected, release your protective circle and extinguish your candle.

There are many things related to your magic that you can purify and cleanse with chamomile essential oil including:

  • Dedicated places
  • Altars

The magickal items you want to consecrate don’t need to be fancy.

For example, just use a regular drinking glass instead of a golden chalice.  Instead of a fancy ritual robe, a regular bathrobe is more than adequate.

Chamomile does not care what your magical items look like.  What matters is the intent and the energy you inject into your items.

You can also purify your tools with chamomile incense.  Here are a variety of Chamomile incense sticks sold by Amazon if you are interested.

Ritual to purify your tools using chamomile incense (or any other purifying incense).

Remember, this is just one example.  There are many ways to consecrate an object.

  • Clear yourself of negative thoughts and negative energies.
  • Light your chamomile incense.
  • Draw down the divine or whatever power you may be calling.
  • Imagine the positive force of the divine that is flowing into you or the object you wish to consecrate.
  • Imagine becoming one with this power.
  • Project that power into your object.
  • You may wish to move the magickal tool you are purifying through the chamomile smoke or move the smoking chamomile around your object.
  • State your intent out loud.  for example: “I consecrate this chalice, that with the force of true will, it may become a resource and tool for the accomplishment of my True Will.”

So you do not need to re-purify your tool every time you are going to use it, when done using your object of power, keep it in a special place that is used only for ritual purposes.

Or if you choose to, you can always purify your tool every time you wish to use it.  Do what makes you feel comfortable.

Ritual to cleanse yourself of sorrows and troubles using chamomile.

Note: This is a lengthy ritual (petition), so take your time.  The ritual is to be performed midsummer.

  • You will need the following:  An altar or other consecrated space dedicated to rituals, a small cloth pouch, a cauldron (or some other heatproof container), red candles, a censer, and a wand (if you do not have a wand, use your upraised hand).
  • Prepare a small cloth pouch and fill the pouch with midsummer herbs such as chamomile, lavender, St. John’s Wort, vervain, rosemary, thyme, verbena, calendula, mullein, or mint.  This will become your petition.
  • While creating your pouch, mentally pour all your troubles, problems, pains, sorrows, and illnesses, into this petition as you construct it.
  • Tie the pouch shut with a red string.
  • Place this on your altar or a consecrated space for use during the rite.
  • The cauldron should also be on your altar.
  • Mark the corners with candles to mark the quarters.
  • The red candle placed in a holder should also be on the altar. (For outdoor rituals, light a fire – however small – and drop the pouch into this.)
  • Once you have arranged the altar, light the candles and censer.  (If you wish to cast a circle of stones, now is the time to do it).
  • Now you will recite the Blessing Chant and invoke the Goddess and God.  Stand before the altar and say, with wand upraised:

I celebrate the noon of summer with mystic rites.

O great Goddess and God,

I celebrate the noon of summer with mystic rites.

O great Goddess and God,

all nature vibrates with your energies,

and the Earth is bathed with warmth and life.

Now is the time of forgetting past cares and banes;

O fiery Sun,

burn away the unuseful,

the hurtful,

the bane,

in Your omnipotent power.

Purify me!

Purify me!

Purify me!

  • Lay the wand on the altar.
  • Take up the herbal petition and light it in the red candle on the altar (or, if outdoors, the ritual fire).
  • When it is burning drop it into the cauldron (or some other heat-proof container) and state the following in a loud voice:

I banish you by the powers of the Goddess and God!

I banish you by the powers of the Sun, Moon, and Stars!

I banish you by the powers of the Earth, Air, Fire, and Water!

  • Pause, seeing the hurts and pains burning into nothingness. Then say:

O Gracious Goddess, O Gracious God,

on this night of Midsummer magick,

I pray that You charge my life with wonder and joy.

Help me in attuning with the energies adrift on the

enchanted night air. I give thanks.

  • Reflect upon the purification you have undergone. Feel the powers of nature flowing through you, washing you clean with divine energy.
  • If you had cast a circle of stones, you may now release your circle.

Can chamomile be used for luck?

Chamomile is an herb that can be used to bring about good luck and is known as a lucky flower.  Gamblers will wash their hand with chamomile to increase their luck and if you need some luck, you can take a warm chamomile bath.

The law of attraction states that when you are committed to achieving your goals, luck will automatically be on your side.

If you are already committed, why not try using chamomile to push your good lock a little to the positive side?

Chamomile is believed to attract money.  If you need some luck in your finances or to invite prosperity, you can use chamomile as a part of a money spell.

Ritual to bring luck in attracting money.

Remember, this is just one example.  There are many different money spells you can use.

  • Clear your mind of negative energy so you can raise and direct your positive energy towards getting lucky with your financial situation.
  • Light a green candle while performing the ritual.  This will help manifest luck with money and abundance.
  • Write on a piece of paper what your financial intent is.
  • In a small pouch (I like to use a leather pouch), place three crystals – a quartz crystal, a green aventurine crystal, and a citrine crystal to help enhance your intent and to enhance the power of chamomile.
  • With either dried crushed roman chamomile or chamomile removed from a tea bag, place the herb into your pouch.
  • If you have a small object that symbolizes good luck to you, place that lucky talisman into your pouch.
  • Fold your letter of intent and place it in your pouch.
  • Visualize good luck energy and positive energy emanating from your pouch.
  • Carry your pouch with you for the next 2-5 days, keeping your eye open for financial opportunities.
  • For additional oomph, you may want to use the power of the moon’s energy to help manifest your spell.
  • Perform this ritual during the evening of the new moon and carry your pouch with you until the full moon, always searching for any positive financial situation that arises.

You don’t have to use this ritual just for financial issues.  Use this ritual to manifest any kind of good luck.

Another way to bring good luck is to include chamomile in a nice relaxing bath.

As you soak in your warm bath, focus on your intent and visualize good luck.

The chamomile can help realign your solar plexus chakra, which can be useful to increase your courage and confidence, which may increase your luck.

Some people will even carry chamomile in their pockets to attract good fortune.

What does chamomile smell like?

Chamomile has an herbal, sweet, and fresh smell somewhat like straw with a hint of apples.  Some say that German chamomile has a sweetly smoky aroma.

The smell of chamomile is a very pleasant aroma.  In ancient times, it was placed on the floors of funeral homes.  When people would walk on the flowers, the crushing of the flowers world releases a pleasant aroma.

Chamomile is a very powerful ally in purification and consecration rituals but can be used in many other scenarios.

I personally enjoy the smell of chamomile.  Feels refreshing.

The way you use chamomile in your magical and spiritual practices is only limited by your imagination.
