In magickal circles, the magical properties of chamomile are often used for protection, purification, and luck. Chamomile is one of the nine sacred herbs in Anglo-Saxon traditional Witchcraft.
What is chamomile?
Chamomile is a member of the Asteraceae family, the second-largest plant family. This family consists of over 32,000 known species of flowering plants, shrubs, vines, and trees.
The strong fragrant scent of chamomile will often reveal itself before you see the plant.
There are two varieties of chamomile – English/Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) and German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita).
Chamomile is a powerful magickal herb.
Because of this power, chamomile is a popular ingredient to use in magickal rituals and spell casting and has been used as a healing herb for thousands of years.
People commonly use chamomile tea to promote healing, and stress reduction, and to have a peaceful sleep.
Both varieties of chamomile have similar uses and magickal properties, but for magick, Roman chamomile is generally the preferred variety to use in magick and is the one we will mainly be referencing in this article.
Chamomile can be used during meditation to relax the mind and to find humility or to forgive others.
Chamomile is one of the nine sacred herbs in Anglo-Saxon traditional witchcraft. These sacred nine herbs include:
- Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)
- Chervil (Anthriscus cerefolium)
- Crab apple (Malus sylvestris)
- Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)
- Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)
- Nettle (Urtica dioica)
- Plantain (Plantago lanceolata or Plantago major)
- St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum)
- Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)
Although chamomile can be burned, it is typically used in a tea, crushed, as an essential oil, or as incense.
Other names that chamomile will sometimes go by include: Earth apple, Ground apple, Maythen, Scented mayweed, and Whig plant.
As a general rule, chamomile has magickal and spiritual powers that include 3 main properties (although there are more):
- Protection
- Purification
- Luck
About magick
There is always more than one way to accomplish your magickal goals. Using the magickal properties of chamomile is but one tool from an arsenal of tools and techniques you should be using.
The practice of magick is more common than one might think. Most people practice some sort of religion and essentially all religions have traces of magick in them.
Most religions use various magickal charms, amulets, etc., all derived from earlier pagan religions.
Magick is a spiritual and natural force that everyone possesses and has nothing to do with evil.
Magick is about aligning oneself with natural forces to manifest an intention.
Magick comes from the ability to channel the powers of hidden energies all around us. Different traditions have different names for this energy such as mana, chi, or prana.
Learning to use magick just takes intent and practice.
The more committed you are to your intent, the more successful the outcome will be.
Magick comes from your head and your heart, not from artificial props and tools. But if these tools help you to manifest your magick, then by all means use them.
Common tools used in magick include candles, crystals, herbs, and talismans.
While reading this article, keep in mind there is always more than one way to accomplish your magickal goal.

In old-world magic, using plants and herbs is one of the oldest magical tools known. Over many years, through observation and use, people have learned the magickal properties of plants.
Following are some examples of how you can use chamomile in your daily magick and spiritual rituals.
Can chamomile be used for protection?
Chamomile has powerful protective properties. Chamomile can be used in banishing rituals and can help to create a metaphysical barrier against negative energies, hexes, and curses. Use chamomile in a sachet, as a floor wash, or as a tea, or plant it near doors and windows.
If you plan to delve into magick, banishing should be one of the core skills you should learn to develop early in your magickal journey.
Protective magick is about guarding and regaining your power.
You can either create your magickal protection on your own or you can call upon protective deities for protection.

- When you are under attack from other magick practitioners.
Depending on the type of occult attack, here are some common indications that may occur when you are under a magickal attack:
- Feelings of despair
- Feelings of oppression
- Anxiety
- Fear
- Troubled dreams
- Fatigue
- Feeling out of touch with time
- Feeling of being followed
- See things that are not there
- Smells with no source
- Uncharacteristic compulsions
Protection magick can be applied anywhere, on yourself, in your home, at work, or even in your car.
As a result, there are countless ways to perform protection rituals.
Your intent plays a crucial role in whether your magick will work.
Intent helps you to focus on your purpose which will help to influence events, effect change in material and non-material conditions, and help present an illusion of change that can have a positive effect on you and your surroundings.
If you are planning on using chamomile to protect yourself, there are 3 main steps you should do when using chamomile in a protection ritual.
- Cleanse yourself of negative energy in a bath either using just water or enhanced with salts and herbs.
- Create a protective shield around you with your mind.
- Meditate so you can control your mind and launch your defense.
Once you have completed these three steps, then you can begin your protective ritual with chamomile.
Your protection ritual doesn’t start when you use chamomile, your protection ritual begins when you start preparing yourself, or if you grow your own chamomile, your spell starts with caring for your plant.
And remember, your intent is very important.
