What are spruce trees?

Spruce trees are a type of evergreen coniferous tree belonging to the genus Picea, in the family Pinaceae. They are native to temperate and boreal regions, primarily in the Northern Hemisphere, from North America and Europe to Asia.

There are about 35 species of spruce trees belonging to the genus Picea.

Although you can use any of these species in your magick, 5 primary species are used.

5 species of spruce trees that are used for spiritual or magickal purposes.

  • Norway Spruce (Picea abies): Native to Europe, this species is often used in traditional European magickal practices. Its needles, resin, and wood are used in spells and rituals for protection, purification, and healing.

  • White Spruce (Picea glauca): Native to North America, white spruce is often associated with cleansing and purification rituals. Its needles may be used in teas for internal purification, or its branches used to make smudge sticks.

  • Blue Spruce (Picea pungens): Known for its blueish needles, this spruce is native to the Rocky Mountains and is often associated with peace and tranquility. Some practitioners use it for calming or balancing rituals.

  • Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis): Native to the west coast of North America, Sitka spruce has historical uses among indigenous peoples for medicinal and spiritual purposes. In magick, it can be used for protection or empowerment.

  • Black Spruce (Picea mariana): This species is native to North America and is traditionally used in Native American medicine and spirituality. In magickal practice, it is used for grounding and connecting with ancestral spirits.

The use of any particular species might also depend on the specific magickal properties one is looking to tap into, such as grounding, protection, or spiritual connection.

  • Intent
  • Emotions
  • Confidence

Through your desire, you will drive your power into your magick.

The spell examples I give follow sound magickal practices and I follow the tradition of HARM NO ONE.

On a personal note, I believe everyone has a right to protect themselves.

In those types of cases, I believe you have the right to use magick to protect yourself using binding spells, hexes, curses, and any other means that may be appropriate.

But in my examples, I do not provide these types of spells.

There are many resources I have used to learn about magick and to compile these articles.

Can the magical properties of spruce trees be used for protection?

Spruce is often associated with protection in various magickal traditions due to a variety of historical, symbolic, and practical reasons.  The protective properties of spruce are especially important in indigenous and folk traditions.

For example, Native Americans have used spruce in both medicinal and spiritual practices, often for purification and protection.

The resin of the spruce tree has antibacterial properties, which could be viewed as not only physically protective but also spiritually cleansing, a belief that might have transferred into spiritual practices.

In many magical systems, spruce is associated with the Earth element, which is often called upon for spells and rituals of protection.

Spruce trees are evergreen trees, and in many cultures, evergreens symbolize eternal life, resilience, and protection against the harshness of winter.

Spruce can be used in various forms – needles, wood, resin, and essential oils – making it a versatile tool for a wide array of protective rituals, from smudging to talismans, baths, and anointing oils.

7 examples of how you can use spruce to magickally protect you.

1. Spruce Smudge Stick for Space Clearing:

  • Create a smudge stick by bundling spruce needles or small twigs.
  • Light one end and allow it to smolder.
  • Move around the room or area you wish to protect, using the smoke to cleanse the space while focusing on your intent to banish negative energies.

2. Spruce Amulet for Personal Protection:

  • Place spruce needles, resin, or a small piece of spruce wood in a cloth pouch.
  • Add other protective herbs or crystals if desired.
  • Charge the pouch with your protective intent, perhaps through a chant or ritual, and carry it with you for protection.

3. Spruce Candle Spell:

  • Dress a candle (typically black or white) with spruce essential oil or resin.
  • Carve symbols or words of protection into the candle.
  • Light the candle while focusing on your protective intent, allowing it to burn down completely.

4. Protective Floor Wash with Spruce:

  • Boil spruce needles to make a decoction.
  • Strain the liquid and add it to a bucket of water.
  • Use this water to wash floors, doors, and windows with the intent of laying down a protective barrier.

5. Spruce Boundary Ritual:

  • Place spruce branches around the perimeter of your property or a ritual circle.
  • As you place each branch, state your intent for protection and ask for the energies of the spruce to act as a barrier against negativity.

6. Spruce Incense for Meditation:

  • Crush dried spruce needles or resin to create homemade incense.
  • Burn the incense during a meditation session focused on raising a shield of protective energy around you.

7. Spruce and Salt Jar Spell:

  • Fill a jar with layers of spruce needles and sea salt.
  • As you add each layer, focus on your protective intent.
  • Seal the jar and place it in a location that you wish to protect, such as near a doorway.

Here is a simple protective ritual using spruce that you can perform to shield yourself or a space from negative energies.

Materials:

  • Spruce needles or spruce essential oil
  • 1 white candle
  • Salt
  • A piece of paper and pen
  • A small bowl or dish
  • Lighter or matches

Procedure:

  • Preparation: Cleanse the space where you will perform the ritual. This could be as simple as tidying up or as specific as smudging with sage or another cleansing herb.

  • Cast a Circle: If you usually cast a circle before performing a ritual, do so now.

  • Light the Candle: Place the white candle in the center of your altar or workspace and light it. As you do, say:

I light this flame to illuminate protection, purity, and strength.

  • Prepare the Spruce and Salt Mixture: Take the spruce needles or a few drops of spruce essential oil and mix them with salt in a small bowl. As you mix, focus your intent on protection and shielding. Say:

Elements of Earth and Tree, form a shield, protect me.

  • Write Your Intention: On a small piece of paper, write down what you seek protection from. It could be as specific as a person’s name or as general as “negative energies.”

  • Burn the Intention: Safely burn the piece of paper in the candle flame (use tweezers to hold the paper if needed), and then drop it into the bowl with the spruce and salt mixture. Say:

As this paper burns, so too are my worries and fears transformed into light and protection.

  • Seal the Spell: Take a moment to visualize a protective shield around you or the space you wish to protect. Imagine it emanating from the bowl and growing larger until it forms a complete sphere of protection. Say:

By the power of spruce, by the essence of Earth, this shield is sealed.

  • Close the Circle: If you cast a circle at the beginning, close it now, thanking any deities, elements, or other energies you may have called upon.

  • Final Steps: Let the candle burn down safely, or snuff it out if you prefer to use it again. Keep the bowl with the spruce and salt mixture in a place where you would like to maintain a protective barrier, like near your front door or beside your bed.

  • Thank and Release: Thank any spirits, ancestors, or deities you may have invoked during the ritual, and say:

This circle is open but never broken. So mote it be.”

A quick note about salt:  Although any salt will work, I suggest you use Himalayan Pink Salt.  It’s called the “purest salt on earth” because it’s been maturing in the earth for over 250 million years!

While spruce may not be as commonly linked to abundance as some other herbs like basil or cinnamon, its strong grounding energy can serve as a solid foundation for attracting abundance into your life.

Abundance is in the mind of the beholder.  It’s our own experiences in life that define what abundance means to each of us.

When performing any type of ritual, especially abundance and prosperity rituals, it is imperative that you be as clear as possible with your exact intention.

You do not want unintended consequences.

Spruce wood or spruce essential oil can be used to craft or anoint ritual tools like wands, staffs, or altars, imbuing them with the tree’s grounding and protective energies.
