What is cedar

Of the many species, only four are considered “true” cedars: Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica), Cyprian Cedar (Cedrus brevifolia), Cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus Libani), Deodar Cedar Tree (Cedrus Deodara).

True cedar trees are only native to the Mediterranean and Himalayan regions.  Cedars that grow elsewhere, like the red cedar that grows here in the southwest where I live are actually cypress or juniper.

For this article when we refer to cedars, we are referring to both true cedar and cypress variants.

These other cedars can also be used in magic rituals since they are made up of mostly the same compounds found in true cedar. 

For example, cedar is extremely sacred to Native Americans here in the southwest.  But these cedar species come from the Cypress family, commonly known as arborvitaes, including red and white cedars found in North America.

Brief History Of The Magical Properties Of Cedarwood

The cedar tree has been revered for its spiritual significance for thousands of years.

The earliest mention of cedarwood comes from ancient Sumerian cuneiform tablets.  In these ancient tablets, it is said that a battle occurred between the demigods and the humans over the beautiful and divine forest of Cedar trees near southern Mesopotamia.  

This forest, once protected by the Sumerian god Enlil, was completely bared of its trees when humans entered its grounds 4700 years ago, after winning the battle against the guardians of the forest, the demigods.

Ancient Egyptians used cedarwood to anoint the bodies of the dead so the dead would experience rebirth and regrowth.

Chests made of cedar dating back thousands of years have been found at the Temple of Apollo at Utica housing perfectly preserved scrolls made of vellum and papyrus.

The wood from cedar has long been used for the doors of sacred temples.

Throughout the world, people have long burned cedar as part of their purification and cleansing rituals.

Can cedarwood be used for purifying a space or as part of a purification ritual?

Using cedarwood as part of a magical or spiritual purification ritual can purify a space or create a sacred space and restore the positive vibrations of your aura.

It is important to cleanse a space before performing other types of rituals.  There are a variety of ways to cleanse a space.

To cleanse or purify a space using cedar, you could burn cedar wood or incense made of cedar.  If you have never burned cedar, it is a wonderful smell.  It has a strong sweet woody scent reminiscent of the holidays.  It is one of the best-smelling firewoods you can get.

Can cedarwood banish negative energy?

Cedar can be used to help banish negative energy and entities from a space.  Keep in mind that using cedarwood to banish negative energy is usually just one part of cleaning the space of negative energy.  The entire process can take from a few minutes to many months.

Many people believe that evil entities get their power from negative energy. 

By using cedar to remove the negative energy from the space controlling your negative thoughts, and even praying or citing mantras, you may be able to remove the negative energy and hostile spirits yourself.

To remove minor negative energy, you can get away with burning cedar incense or smudging with cedar or sage.  Be sure you leave a window open to allow the negative energy to leave the space.

Can cedarwood reverse or halt a spell or hex?

Cedarwood can be used to remove a spell or hex that is causing things to go wrong in your life.  There are some simple techniques you can use to break some spells.

Are you cursed or are you just having bad luck?  If you are just having bad luck, then trying to remove a hex is not going to work.

Usually, when someone casts a hex or curse on you, it will fall into one of these categories:

A ritual bath can be used to help remove a curse.  Some common herbs and essential oils you can include in your ritual bath include hyssop, basil, mugwort, cedarwood, patchouli, vetiver, and wormwood, along with a pinch of salt.

Sprinkle some or all of these herbs in your hot bath.  Get in your bath, relax, and allow the soothing properties of these herbs to do their magic and break the hex that has a hold on you.

If using essential oils, add a few drops of each to your bath.

While taking your long relaxing bath, light candles around you and try to think of only positive thoughts. This bath can sometimes cleanse away the bad spell someone has placed on you.

Another way to remove a hex is by burning the above-mentioned herbs in a small caldron or pan.  Burning these herbs will have what is referred to as an “uncrossing effect”, which means they can uncross the hex or curse, breaking it free.

What Does Cedarwood Smell Like?

Cedarwood has a warm woody aroma with sweet, balsamic undertones and a bit of a camphoraceous odor.  There can also be a touch of spiciness.  Some people can detect a bit of a citrus and floral aroma mixed in.

Because of these qualities, the aroma is used extensively throughout the perfume industry, and candle industry.
