Clary sage has many properties that play a potent role in magickal circles. These properties include assisting in opening up your third eye, enhancing your dream state, increasing the ability to enhance clairvoyance and prophecy, revealing the hidden, and inducing trance and meditative states.

What is clary sage
Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) is a biennial flowering herb that tends to grow in a dry climate. Clary sage is native to the Mediterranean Basin but is now grown throughout the world, including a large amount of it being grown in northeastern North Carolina.
Clary does not refer to physical sight, but our third vision which is a mystical third eye that allows us to see beyond the veil. This includes psychic visions, perception, intuition, foresight, and several other higher states of consciousness.
During the first year of growth, clary sage forms a rosette of large, velvety leaves. In the second year, the plant produces stalks of pink to white flowers. These stalks can be up to 5 feet tall.
Essential oil is extracted from the top few pairs of the flowering stalk.
To maximize the potency of the essential oil, the flowers must be harvested during the evening hours, when the oil concentration is the highest. And, clary sage must be distilled immediately.

Sages are one of a witch’s favorite herbs, including clary sage. The properties of clary sage have been known for a long time. As a result, clary sage goes by many names including:
- Clear Eye
- See Bright
- Eyebright
- The Woman’s Oil
- Clarywort
- Ocultus Christ
- Eye of Christ
In ancient times clary sage was used as an eye wash and to treat menstrual cramps.
People would also use clary sage to enhance their ability to dream and to help achieve meditative or visionary states of consciousness.
In the 1600s, herbalist Nicholas Culpepper documented how mixing clary sage with wine would act like an aphrodisiac.

Can clary sage open up your “third eye”?
Using clary sage can help open up your third eye (also known as Ajna chakra) and can induce a state of euphoria. Your third eye governs how prana (energy) moves within the body.
Your third eye (also called the mind’s eye or inner eye) is the pineal gland located in the vertebrate brain located near the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Your third eye is located on your forehead between the brow.
The third eye is connected to providing perception beyond ordinary sight. This includes being able to increase clarity, concentration, imagination, intuition, lucid dreaming, telepathy, clairvoyance, astral projection, and other altered states of consciousness.
Your third eye, known as Ajna chakra is your sixth chakra. When your sixth chakra is balanced, it is believed you can see or perceive things you can not normally see.

- After doing this, you need to meditate. Once you are in your meditative state, focus your attention on your third eye.
- While your eyes are closed, turn your eyeballs towards your third eye.
- repeat the mantra “om” either in your mind or out loud.
- To also help stimulate your Ajna chakra, control your breathing inhale – hold – exhale, in a 1-1-2 ratio. In other words, when you exhale, exhale twice as long as you inhaled.

Can clary sage be used to enhance dreams?
Clary sage can help open your mind for dream work by encouraging your third eye to have more vivid imagery in your dreams of whatever you are feeling in your dream state.
Clary sage has been known to calm the mind and helps to provide a restful night’s sleep.
Clary sage holds the energy of the full moon, which gives it its relationship with lunacy, dreams, and night activity.
For thousands of years, shamans, healers, sorcerers, witches, and priests have used clary sage to enhance their dream work.

Up to 75% of clary sage is an ester called Linalyl Acetate. This ester is one of the main compounds that give clary sage its distinct odor and flavor.

Of all my essential oils, I personally find clary sage to be one of the most relaxing oils that I diffuse. After diffusing clary sage for 5-10 minutes, I have a euphoric feeling that is difficult to describe.
Can clary sage be used in love spells?
Clary sage has been known to set a sensual mood with its stimulating scent that is a calming influence on the mind. When used in a love spell, clary sage is usually just one of several herbs or essential oils used.
