What are Lemons?
Lemons are bright yellow citrus fruits known for their tart flavor. Rich in vitamin C, they’re used worldwide in culinary dishes, drinks, and traditional medicine. Beyond their health benefits, lemons have cultural and spiritual significance, often symbolizing purity and positivity.
Lemons (Citrus limon) are a hybrid citrus fruit, and as such, there isn’t a vast number of “species” of lemons.
Instead, there are various cultivars and types of lemons.
The exact lemon we’re familiar with is believed to be a hybrid between bitter orange (Citrus × aurantium) and citron (Citrus medica).
Most references to lemons in magickal contexts speak broadly about the fruit and its general attributes, such as its bright color, tart flavor, and cleansing properties.
The most common lemon varieties available in many regions are the Eureka and Lisbon lemons, so these are likely the types most frequently used in magick simply due to their accessibility.
However, the Meyer lemon, being sweeter and more aromatic, might be chosen for specific spells or rituals where its unique qualities are desired.
When following instructions for a ritual or a spell, If it does not feel right to you, change it. There is no magickal law that says you cannot change YOUR spell to fit YOUR needs.
The 3 most important aspects of any magick are:
- Intent
- Emotions
- Confidence
Through your desire, you will drive your power into your magick.
On a personal note, I believe everyone has a right to protect themselves.
In those types of cases, I believe you have the right to use magick to protect yourself using binding spells, hexes, curses, and any other means that may be appropriate.
But in my examples, I do not provide these types of spells.
There are many resources I have used to learn about magick and to compile these articles.

I highly suggest you keep a magickal diary of your work. Your diary is your most essential and powerful tool. Document all your successes and any factors that led to those successes.
I personally use this diary Moonster Leather Journal Refillable Notebook.
I like this journal because it has a leather cover, and pen, and is refillable. I prefer unlined paper, because I tend to draw a lot in my journals, and don’t like lines interfering.
Plus, the leather and high-quality paper give my journal a more “magickal” feel.
Can the magical properties of lemons be used for purification and cleansing?
Lemons are revered in magick for their purifying properties. Their bright color and fresh scent symbolize cleanliness and positivity. Used in rituals, they can cleanse spaces of negative energies. A lemon bath or lemon-infused water can purify the aura, while lemon incense clears spaces.
As an example, In Wiccan traditions, lemons are often used in purification rituals.
A common practice involves cutting a lemon into quarters, sprinkling it with sea salt, and then placing it in the corners of a room.
This is believed to absorb negative energies. After a day or two, the lemon quarters are discarded, taking the negativity with them.
In Hoodoo, a form of traditional African American folk magic, lemons are used in various ways to cleanse and protect.
One popular method is the “Lemon and Egg Cleanse.”
An individual rolls a lemon and an egg over their body, absorbing negative energy, and then disposes of them at a crossroads or in running water.
In Santeria, a syncretic religion of West African and Caribbean origin, lemons are used in “limpias” or cleansing ceremonies.
Practitioners combine lemon juice, water, and other herbs to create a cleansing bath.
This bath is believed to purify an individual from bad luck, negative influences, or malevolent spirits.
I know that after I have used lemon polish, lemon floor wash, lemon dish soap, etc., the space just doesn’t smell refreshed, it feels cleansed.
Here are 7 examples of how lemons have been traditionally used to purify and cleanse a space.
1. Absorbing Negative Energies:
- Lemons are often placed in rooms, either whole or cut into halves or quarters, to absorb negative energies.
- After a certain period, the lemon is believed to have absorbed the negativity and is then discarded away from the home, often at a crossroads or in running water.
2. Lemon and Salt:
- Combining the purifying properties of both lemon and salt, many practitioners sprinkle salt on a lemon half and place it in rooms or corners to ward off bad vibes.
- This combination is believed to not only absorb negative energies but also to neutralize them.
3. Cleansing Baths:
- Lemon slices or lemon juice are added to ritual baths for purification.
- Bathing with these ingredients is believed to cleanse the aura and remove any hexes, curses, or negative energies attached to an individual.
4. Lemon Essential Oil:
- The oil extracted from lemon peels is used in diffusers, anointing candles, or dabbed on the pulse points to cleanse a space or person.
- Its refreshing scent is believed to uplift spirits and purify the mind.
5. Protection and Warding:
- Lemons, often combined with other protective ingredients like cloves, are hung or placed at entrances to homes or carried as talismans to ward off evil spirits and protect against negative intentions.
6. Lemon Washes:
- A mixture of lemon juice and water can be used to wipe down floors, walls, and objects, cleansing them of negative energies and ensuring a peaceful environment.
7. Dream Work:
- Some folk traditions believe that placing a lemon under one’s pillow can purify the mind, leading to clearer dreams and preventing nightmares.
These traditions stem from the conviction that lemons, with their vibrant hue and invigorating aroma, naturally counteract darkness and negativity, bringing clarity, peace, and positive energy to their place.
Here is an example of a ritual that uses a lemon, sage, and candles to purify a space
Materials:
- 1 fresh lemon
- A bundle of dried sage (smudge stick)
- White or yellow candle
- Matches or lighter
- A small bowl of water
- A small plate or saucer
Procedure:
- Preparation: Begin by ensuring the space you wish to cleanse is tidy. Open windows slightly for ventilation and to allow negative energies to escape.
- Lemon Energy Cleanse: Cut the lemon into two halves. Place one half on the plate or saucer and set it in the center of the room. As you do so, visualize the lemon drawing in and absorbing any negative energies. The other half can be squeezed into the bowl of water, infusing it with the lemon’s purifying properties.
- Sage Smudging: Light the end of the sage bundle until it starts to produce smoke. As the smoke rises, walk around the room in a clockwise direction, ensuring the smoke reaches every corner. As you do this, recite a cleansing affirmation or chant, such as:
“By the power of sage and lemon, cleanse this space of negativity, filling it with light and positivity.”
- Candle Lighting: Place the candle in the center of the room, near the lemon half. Light the candle, focusing on its flame. Visualize the flame burning away any residual negative energies, replacing them with warmth and light. Allow the candle to burn safely for at least an hour, ensuring it’s in a safe location away from flammable items.
- Closing the Ritual: After the candle has burned for a while, dip your fingers into the lemon-infused water and sprinkle it around the room, especially in areas where you feel the energy might be particularly stagnant. This acts as a final purification step. As you do this, visualize the room being filled with a bright, golden light.
- Disposal: Once you feel the space has been thoroughly cleansed, extinguish the candle. The sage can be stored for future use. The lemon half on the plate should be discarded outside, away from your home, releasing any absorbed negativity back to the earth to be neutralized.
