GENERAL INFORMATION FOR ORGANIC PATCHOULI ESSENTIAL OIL:
Patchouli essential oil (Pogostemon cablin) is processed from a perennial bushy herb in the mint family. It grows about 3 feet high with large, fragrant leaves and small pale pink flowers that blossom in the late fall.
The leaves and flowers are usually allowed to begin to lightly ferment in order to break the cell walls down, allowing the aroma to escape before being steam distilled.
Emotionally, patchouli essential oil is calming and grounding. For many people, patchouli essential oil provides feelings of relaxation and can help ease away stress, anger, anxiety and even sadness. It does this by stimulating the release of pleasure hormones including serotonin and dopamine.
Because of these characteristics, it is very popular to use during mediation or prayer.
During the 1700’s, Chinese silk traders traveling to the Middle East would use dried patchouli leaves to discourage moths from laying their eggs in the delicate silk. This tradition of using patchouli to discourage moths spread throughout Europe and became a sign of luxury during that era.
Patchouli essential oil has skin regenerating properties. For this reason, some people will apply patchouli essential oil to their skin to give it a healthy, youthful, looking glow. It has also been used on a number of skin disorders including psoriasis, dermatitis and eczema.
Today patchouli organic essential oil is used in a variety of health products including soaps, perfumes, shampoos, and lotions.
Look out for companies selling patchouli organic essential oil priced inexpensively. Some of these companies will mix patchouli with gurjun balsam oil, copaiba balsam oil, cedarwood oil, vetiver, and various other chemicals and vegetable oils.
