Clary Sage Essential Oil, Salvia Sclarea

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR CLARY SAGE ESSENTIAL OIL:

Cultivated clary sage (Salvia Sclarea) essential oil comes from a bushy biennial plant that grows 3 feed high and has hairy stems with large, fragrant leaves and lilac-pink (almost blue) flower spikes.  It is from these flowers that our clary sage is steam distilled from.  To cut costs, less expensive clary sage also includes the leaves in the distillation process.   These inferior essential oils are not appropriate for aromatherapy.

Clary sage is well known by many cultures.  It gets its name from its ability to bring clarity and health.

Clary sage essential oil can help promote relaxation by inducing a state of peace and tranquility.

When used in massage oils, clary sage essential oil has the ability to boost circulation.  It is also used in various skin preparations because of its rich anti-oxidant contents and its high linalyl acetate content.

Clary sage has a natural sedative effect, so many people use it to help them relax.

Because of its sedative qualities, many people have used clary sage to reduce anxiety and stress.

Clary sage essential oil is believed to have the best anti-depressive properties of any essential oil according to a study published  by sciencedirect.com (study).

For some people, when used in a diffuser, clary sage essential oil can open up their sinuses and airways and can reduce congestion.  It can also relax the bronchial tubes.

DIFFUSER USES:

Clary sage has a strong aroma with strong actions, so it is best to use in small amounts or blended with other essential oils.  Please be aware that this essential oil has the potential of making you or anyone else in the vicinity drowsy.  Clary sage is an excellent essential oil to use during meditation or when performing yoga.

CLARY SAGE ESSENTIAL OIL RECIPES:

Here are a few blends you can try with clary sage essential oil. These amounts are for a diffuser in the 100 – 200 ml capacity. Refer to our diffusing guidelines or your instruction manuals to adjust the amount you use for your particular size of diffuser by either adding or decreasing the drops depends on your diffuser capacity.

SAFETY:

Clary Sage Essential Oil is non-toxic, non-irritant, and generally non-sensitizing. 

However, it can cause increased intoxication, headaches, and nausea when used with alcohol.  It can also intensify the effects of sedatives and some pain medications.  Do not use while pregnant due to a history of causing problems including miscarriage and premature contractions.  May cause drowsiness, so avoid using while driving or operating hazardous equipment.
