Soapstone is also known as steatite or soaprock, which is a type of metamorphic rock mainly composed of the magnesium rich mineral talc.  Soapstone is relatively soft, making it easy to carve.  Since soapstone is so soft, It is ideal for carving into various shapes and patterns. 

The more talc in the stone, the softer its grade.  Some soapstone that has a high talc content even possess a soapy feel when touched.
