The reason we use fennel in love spells and love magick is because fennel symbolizes strength in relationships. Used in spells to attract love, it’s carried in seed form or added to potions. Placing fennel under pillows is believed to induce romantic dreams, enhancing its role in love rituals.

While working at Vitality Unlimited, a local health food store here in Santa Fe, NM, I used to enjoy packaging fennel seeds.  I love licorice, and since fennel seeds taste like licorice, I would always put a small amount of seeds to the side for me to have.  Little did I know at the time that they held some powerful love magic.

Fennel, with its sweet aroma and heart-shaped leaves, is a popular herb in love magick, symbolizing strength, vitality, and longevity in relationships.

Traditionally used in various cultures, fennel is believed to attract love and enhance romantic feelings.

It’s commonly incorporated into love spells and potions, often carried in seed form in small bags or pouches to draw in a loving partner.

Fennel is also one of the nine sacred herbs of the Anglo-Saxons which includes:

Camomile (Matricaria chamomilla), Nettle (Urtica dioica), Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris), Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), Plantain (Plantago major), Watercress (Nasturtium officinale), Chervil (Anthriscus cerefolium) and, possibly, Cockspur Grass (Echinochloa crus-galli). Some believe that the latter was instead Betony (Stachys officinalis).

Depending on where the herb is found, fennel can also go by the following names:

  • Common Fennel
  • Sweet Fennel
  • Wild Fennel (for the wild variety)
  • Foeniculum vulgare (its botanical name)
  • Fenkel

  • Fenollo
  • Finocchio (in Italian)
  • Hinojo (in Spanish)
  • Fenouil (in French)
  • Marathos (in Greek, for the ancient variety)

In this article, I will explore the fascinating world of how fennel is used in love spells, love magick and love rituals.

3 love spell examples that include fennel

The spell examples I give follow sound magickal practices and I follow the tradition of HARM NO ONE.

 Fennel seed love charm

Creating a Fennel Seed Love Charm is a meaningful ritual in love magick.  Creating this charm is a personal and introspective process, allowing for reflection on one’s desires and aspirations in love. The charm serves as a physical representation of these intentions, constantly emitting the energy associated with them.

Materials Needed:

  • Fennel seeds
  • A small red or pink cloth pouch (red for passion, pink for romance)
  • Red or pink ribbon
  • Rose quartz crystal (optional, for added love energy)
  • Lavender or rose petals (for their love-attracting properties)
  • A piece of paper and a pen

Procedure:

  1. Setting Your Intention: Before you begin, take a few moments to clear your mind and focus on your intention for this charm. This could be attracting a new love, enhancing an existing relationship, or fostering self-love.
  2. Preparing the Pouch: Lay your cloth pouch flat. If you don’t have a pouch, you can create one by cutting a small square of cloth.
  3. Writing Your Intention: On the piece of paper, write down your specific intention or desire related to love. Fold this paper small enough so it can fit inside the pouch.
  4. Adding the Fennel Seeds: Fill the pouch with a spoonful of fennel seeds. Fennel seeds are believed to draw in love and strengthen the emotional connection.
  5. Including Additional Elements: Add a few lavender or rose petals into the pouch. If you’re using a rose quartz crystal, place it in the pouch as well. These elements enhance the love-drawing properties of the charm.
  6. Sealing the Pouch: Once all items are in the pouch, draw the edges together and tie it securely with the ribbon. While tying the ribbon, you might want to chant a simple affirmation or mantra related to your intention, like “May love flow to me freely and abundantly.
  7. Activating the Charm: Hold the completed charm in your hands and close your eyes. Visualize your intention manifesting, and feel the emotions associated with achieving your love-related desire. This step is crucial as it charges the charm with your energy and purpose.
  8. Carrying or Placing the Charm: Carry the charm with you in your bag or pocket, or place it in a significant area like beside your bed or on a personal altar. Some choose to wear it around their neck, especially if it’s small and discreet.
  9. Maintenance: Occasionally, you may want to hold the charm, reaffirm your intention, and visualize your desires. This keeps the energy of the charm active and aligned with your goals.

Love candle ritual using fennal essential oil

Using fennel essential oil in a candle magick ritual for romance involves a blend of intention-setting, aromatherapy, and the symbolic properties of colors and herbs. The combination of fennel’s love-attracting properties and the focused energy of candle magick creates a powerful tool for manifesting romance.

Materials Needed:

  • A pink or red candle (pink for gentle love and affection, red for passionate love)
  • Fennel essential oil
  • A small piece of paper and a pen
  • Matches or a lighter
  • Optional: Rose petals or other love-associated herbs, a small altar or sacred space

The Ritual:

  1. Prepare Your Space: Choose a quiet, undisturbed space for the ritual. You may set up a small altar if you have one, placing the candle in the center. Optionally, you can scatter rose petals or other herbs around the space for added love energy.
  2. Set Your Intention: On the piece of paper, write down your intention or desire related to love and romance. This could be attracting a new partner, deepening a current relationship, or increasing self-love and confidence in love matters.
  3. Anoint the Candle: Hold the candle in your hands and focus on your intention. Then, anoint the candle with fennel essential oil. Start from the middle of the candle and move towards the wick, and then from the middle towards the base. As you do this, visualize your intention being absorbed by the candle. Fennel’s aroma and energy are believed to attract love, promote strength in relationships, and encourage open communication.
  4. Charge the Candle: Hold the anointed candle between your palms. Close your eyes and visualize your romantic desires manifesting. Feel the emotions associated with your wish as vividly as possible. This step is crucial for charging the candle with your personal energy and intent.
  5. Light the Candle: Place the candle back on the altar or your chosen space. Light it with matches or a lighter while focusing on your intention. As the candle burns, it releases your intention into the universe.
  6. Affirmation or Chant: While the candle is lit, you may say an affirmation or chant related to love and romance. It could be as simple as, “May love flow to me freely, may my heart be open and ready to receive.
  7. Burn the Intention Paper: Safely burn the piece of paper with your written intention, either in the candle flame or in a fireproof bowl. This symbolizes releasing your intention to the universe.
  8. Meditate and Close the Ritual: Spend some time in meditation, focusing on the flame and your desire. Once you feel complete, express gratitude to the universe for hearing your request. Allow the candle to burn down safely.
  9. Disposing of the Remains: After the candle has completely burned down, dispose of the remains outside, returning them to the earth. This symbolizes the completion of your ritual and the start of your intention manifesting in the physical world.

 Fennel altar offering ritual

Creating a fennel altar offering ritual can be a meaningful way to harness the herb’s energies for love, protection, or communication. Remember, the effectiveness of the ritual lies in your intention and the energy you put into it. Each step should be performed mindfully, with a focus on your desired outcome.

Materials Needed:

  • Fennel seeds or leaves
  • An altar or dedicated sacred space
  • Candles (preferably in colors associated with your intention, like pink for love or green for healing)
  • Incense (optional, for setting a sacred atmosphere)
  • Small bowl or offering dish
  • Other symbolic items (crystals, symbols, images, or other herbs that align with your intention)
  • A written intention or prayer

Procedure:

  1. Cleanse Your Space: Begin by cleansing your space. This can be done by burning incense, using a sage smudge stick, or simply by visualizing the space being filled with light and positive energy.
  2. Set Up Your Altar: Arrange your altar with your chosen items. Place the candles and incense (if using) at the center or back of the altar. The fennel seeds or leaves should be placed in the small bowl or on the offering dish, prominently displayed.
  3. Light the Candles and Incense: Light your candles and incense to invite warmth and sacredness into your ritual. As you light them, focus on your intention and the purpose of your ritual.
  4. Place Your Written Intention: Write down your specific intention on a piece of paper. This could be a prayer, a wish, a poem, or a simple statement of what you hope to achieve or manifest. Place this paper on the altar.
  5. Present the Fennel Offering: Hold the bowl or dish of fennel in your hands and quietly, or aloud, state your intention for the offering. For example, if your intention is to attract love, you might say something like, “I offer this fennel to invite love and harmony into my life.
  6. Meditate and Visualize: Spend a few moments in meditation, focusing on your intention. Visualize your desired outcome as vividly as possible. Feel the emotions associated with your wish being fulfilled.
  7. Close the Ritual: Conclude your ritual by expressing gratitude. Thank the universe, the divine, or any spiritual guides you believe in for their support. Snuff out the candles and incense, signifying the end of the ritual.
  8. Leave the Offering: Leave the fennel offering on your altar for a period of time — this could be until the next full moon, a specific number of days, or until you feel it’s time to remove it. Trust your intuition on this.

  9. Dispose of the Offering Respectfully: When you’re ready to remove the offering, do so with respect. The fennel can be returned to the earth by burying it or placed in a natural body of water. This act symbolizes releasing your intention to the universe.
