  2. Study from the US National Library Of Medicine

What these studies come down to is that participants are exposed to the aroma of rosemary while performing visual processing tasks and serial subtraction tasks. The results of these studies seem to suggest that both speed and accuracy are improved after being exposed to the aroma of rosemary.

The importance of improving memory and alertness is obvious and can have a long term impact on your quality of life.

Rosemary essential oil has a classic herbaceous scent with subtle minty and woody undertones.  The aroma can vary depending on the species of rosemary.

Our rosemary is low in camphor.  This is important because camphor has a neurotoxic potential.  Rosemary that is relatively low in camphor is the safest to use for most aromatherapy applications.

Rosemary is best used in small amounts for inhalation.  Do not use this essential oil around individuals with a history of seizures.

Rosemary essential oil is quite stimulating.  It is a good choice for those who need to remain alert.  It is great to use for long study sessions or while driving long distances.  Invigorating, stimulating, and refreshing are the best words to describe the effects of rosemary oil.

What is Peppermint essential oil?

peppermint leaf

Peppermint essential oil has a fresh and invigorating aroma.  It is one of the best essential oils for alertness.  It is excellent for boosting mental and physical alertness.  It has an energizing effect on both mind and body.

Peppermint is a hybrid cross between water mint and spearmint.

There are different varieties of peppermint, but the one most people think of is called peppermint superior (mentha piperita).

Peppermint superior is the same type found in peppermint candy.

The essential oil is extracted through steam distillation.  It takes about 600 pounds to produce 2 pounds of essential oil.  It is a powerful oil and can overpower other oils if you are creating a blend.

After using peppermint essential oil, you will feel relaxed and energized, and ready to take on the world.

What is Patchouli essential oil?

Patchouli

Inhaling patchouli is known to uplift the mood and release tension. For this reason, it is considered one of the best essential oils for alertness.

The essential oil is extracted through steam distillation from a bushy herb in the mint family.  But because the cell walls need to be broken down in order to extract the aroma, the leaves are allowed to slightly ferment prior to distilling them.

Patchouli is a favorite in the perfume industry because of its rich, earthly and sometimes woody aroma.  It has a slightly sweet smell.

Patchouli has a long lasting scent, so it is great for blending with other essential oils such as bergamot, lavender, clary sage, and grapefruit.

What is Vetiver essential oil?

Vetiver

For many years, vetiver oil has been used in aromatherapy for relaxation and reducing stress.

It can also be used to reduce panic attacks, emotional trauma, anxiety, insomnia, hysteria and depression.

Vetiver is also considered one of the best essential oils for alertness.

Vetiver has a complex, musky, earthy aroma with sweet floral hints and woody undertones that is a little on the edgy side.

Some have described the aroma as ripe pears.

Across India and Sri Lanka, it is known as “the oil of tranquility.”

Vetiver is one of those essential oils that people either love, or hate.

The essential oil is distilled from the roots of a tropical grass.  Because it is labor intensive to cultivate, vetiver is often diluted with less expensive oils or synthetic fragrances are added to reduce cost.

Vetiver is known for promoting mental alertness.  For some, vetiver is used on its own.  But where it really shines is when it is blended with other essential oils.

It blends well with many essential oils including: cedar, chamomile, frankincense, ginger, jasmine, lavender, lemongrass, patchouli, rose, sandlewood, vanilla, and ylang ylang.

What is Eucalyptus essential oil?

This minty-scented essential oil is best known for its de-congesting benefits.

But it also has a way of refreshing the mind and boosting energy levels through its cooling properties.

It is sometimes diffused in classrooms in order to boost student performances.

Eucalyptus is typically extracted through steam distillation.

There are different types of eucalyptus available, each with similar but different properties.  The three most common are:

  • Eucalyptus globulus – the most common type.  It has a deep camphorous, minty, pine scent.  This species is the type used in most medical applications.
  • Eucalyptus radiata – is crisp, clean, with a slightly herbaceous aroma that is medicinal, with a bright and fresh type of smell.
  • Eucalyptus dives – has a stimulating and uplifting smell.

Eucalyptus helps to promote feelings of relaxation and relieves tension.

Eucalyptus is also one of the best essential oils for alertness.
